Sydney, the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia. It is situated on the south-east coast of Australia and is bounded by the waters of the Tasman Sea, which lies in the Southern Pacific Ocean.

This bustling city has a current population of 4.7 million people, and this number is expected to reach beyond 5 million by 2020.

Sydney was the site of the first British colony in Australia, established in 1788 at Sydney Cove by Arthur Phillip, commodore of the First Fleet and the first Governor of New South Wales.

The first settlement was established as a penal colony. The desperate solution to accommodate prisoners from the over crowded English prisons system, when they lost the ability to send them to the Americas after the War of Independence.

The city is built on Port Jackson and the surrounding hills. The area is more commonly known these days as Sydney Harbour, famous the world over as the home of the its Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. The hinterland of the metropolitan area is surrounded by national parks, Bondi Beach, Sydney Australia and the coastal regions feature many bays, rivers, inlets and beaches including the famous Bondi Beach and Manly Beach. Today this multi-cultural metropolis is a major world city, a prime destination for tourists from all  around the globe. This magnificent city on one of the worlds great harbours, has hosted multiple major international sporting events, including the 1938 British Empire Games (now known as the Commonwealth Games) and the 2000 Summer Olympics.
