Mammoth Cave, Margaret River, Western Australia.

Off The Beaten Track .. Mammoth Cave, Margaret River, W.A.

Mammoth Cave is a large limestone cave 21 km south of the town of Margaret River in south-western Western Australia, and about 300 km south of Perth. It lies within the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park and is surrounded by Karri and Marri forest.

Mammoth Cave is a wonderfully wild cave and can be best described as the perfect home for caveman. An array of formations angle off in all directions and the natural light protruding through the entrance and exit give this cave a liveable feel. In this cave you can see all of nature’s fantastic forces at work. It is truly remarkable.

Entry is made via a wide boardwalk which allows some disabled access into the first cavern. This awe inspiring cave is a natural time capsule and home to ancient fossil remains of extinct animals. Formations include the Mammoth shawl and the “Karri Forest” flowstone which seems to resemble the unique karri trees of the Augusta Margaret River region.

The Margaret River region offers visitors some of the most unique and stunning cave experiences in Australia.  Along the spine of the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge and beneath soaring karri forest lie more than 150 caves. These caves belong to a series of complex and fragile karst systems which are landscapes formed by the rapid drainage of water underground. Karst systems are characterised most often by caves, dolines (large holes), blind valleys, sinking streams and springs. The main road that travels along the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge is aptly named Caves Road.

The Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association operates three spectacular show caves; LakeMammoth and Jewel. These caves are easily accessible, each with their own story to tell and decorated with their own unique and dazzling formations.  Lake, Mammoth and Jewel caves are open to the public every day of the year, with the exception of Christmas Day. Tour times vary with self guided and guided options available plus a range of on-site catering available. Extra tours are offered during peak periods.
