Follow the Tableland trail to historic Tarzali.
A small rural village on Millaa Millaa road, Tarzali was built on fertile and well-timbered soil as a closer settlement to its neighbour Malanda. The railway from Malanda was built through very rugged country and eventually reached Tarzali in 1916 and the final stage of the railway to Millaa Millaa was completed in 1921.
It is thought that the name Tarzali is derived from an aboriginal expression describing a eucalypt species, the area was very rugged and heavily timbered, and in 1915 supported two timber mills, Dunlop Saw Mill and Reid’s Saw Mill, requiring 14 teamsters and their bullock teams to haul timber to these mills, local dairy farmers railed their milk and milk products to factories near Atherton. In the 1950s the factories turned to
road transport for milk, Tarzali milk was sent to the Malanda and Millaa Millaa factories supplementing milk supplies for the longest milk run in the world Malanda Milk.
The railway closed in 1964.In its heyday there was a post office, Primary School, Hotel, two sawmills and the railway (1915-1967)
