Yungaburra – The largest national Trust Village in Queensland.

The Yungaburra historic centre is listed by the national trust of Queensland and is the home of the Lake Eacham Hotel, built in 1910 for rail travellers and timber exports to Cairns, featuring silky oak and maple timbers from the tableland rainforests, the lounge, dining room and staircase remain in their original form, having escaped renovations completed in 1926.The timber mill transported logs to Cairns for export and it was built in 1910 the same year as the hotel. Collect the Yungaburra Historic Village 1890 brochure or the town loop walk map from the Information Centre and take a leisurely walk around the town and discover 24 buildings from the early 1920’s,18 of these buildings are listed with the national trust making Yungaburra Yungaburra Historic Buildingsthe largest national trust village in Queensland. The Garage and Sales Room, The Gables, Churches, Police house, Court house, Bank, Tailors Shop and more they all have a story to tell. Yungaburra Butchery was registered in 1914 and is the oldest registered butchery in Queensland; ponder as to why a high thick stone wall that seems out of place amongst so many buildings made from magnificent timber was built.

 

Yungaburra a favourite stop for bike tours.The tableland is a favourite destination for motor bike enthusiasts, riding up from the coast along scenic country roads and feeling the cooler climate, it’s considered a perfect weekend ride. Many vintage cars are often seen cruising along the highways.

 

Yungaburra Timber July 2013Yungaburra was originally named “Allumbah” an aboriginal name for ‘Red Cedar’ indeed some of the best red cedar was logged from Yungaburra. The Allumbah Pocket Village settlement scheme was opened in 1890 and the first settler was John Ignatious Steward. The first steam train arrived in 1910 and provided transport to Tolga and serviced the growing timber, dairy and farming industries.

On a request from the Railway department and to avoid confusion with a coastal town named Aloomba the Platypus Peterson Creek Yungaburra July 2013Queensland Governor in General changed the name of the town from Allumbah to Yungaburra. The local indigenous people’s meaning for Yungaburra is ‘Meeting Place’ the word also means ‘Enquiring’ or “Questioning”.

Yungaburra with its friendly village atmosphere has something for everyone, a haven for wildlife, take a 5 minute walk to the ‘Platypus’ Viewing Platform at Peterson Creek, or a 20 minute walk to the Curtain Fig, for a longer walk start at Allumbah pocket, follow sign posts to Fawleys Pool and continue to Stewards Gully Yungaburra Catholic ChurchParkway, view Lake Tinaroo and return to Yungaburra going past the Pioneers Cemetery. Possible sightings of Platypus, Tree Kangaroos, wallabies, birdlife and wildlife are often seen on this easy walk. On returning to Yungaburra to rest a while take a few more steps to the top end of Allumbah Park, see the old Catholic Church, step into Spencer & Murphy booksellers, discover a treasure trove of collectables, and a book to please everyone, refresh with a great cup of coffee while catching up with your loved ones on free WIFI.

The Annual ‘Tableland Folk Festival’ is held in Yungaburra; this year 2013, the festival will be held on the 24th-27th October. Handmade Timber furniture and timber products, art galleries, Global free Life style Fashions, fine dining and local produce are all found in the village. You will love the atmosphere and meeting the locals.
